Why NIN Errors Matter
Your NIN is a permanent, lifelong record stored in NIMC's national identity database. It is the foundation for your passport, your BVN, your SIM registration and your access to virtually every Nigerian government service. An error on it does not just cause minor inconvenience — it can block critical processes:
- ✗ Passport applications can be rejected when your NIN name doesn't match your passport name
- ✗ BVN–NIN linkage can fail if the date of birth on your NIN doesn't match your bank's records
- ✗ NIMC's self-service portal (*346#) may not return your NIN if the registered phone number is wrong
- ✗ Government benefit programmes and financial services verify against the NIN database — discrepancies cause blocks
The good news: NIN errors can be corrected. The process is called a NIN modification and NINBVN.org handles it from the UK.
The Most Common NIN Errors
- → Name misspelling — the most common issue. A missing letter, transposed characters, or an unofficial nickname captured during original enrolment
- → Wrong date of birth — a day, month or year entered incorrectly at original enrolment, often because the enrolment officer typed it manually
- → Wrong phone number — an old or mistyped number means NIN SMS never arrives and *346# doesn't work
- → Outdated address — not a critical blocker but worth updating for accuracy
- → Gender recorded incorrectly — rare but happens, particularly when the enrolment was done very quickly
- → Wrong middle name or missing middle name — causes passport name mismatch
- → Duplicate biometric record — most complex case, where two NINs exist for the same person from different enrolments
How to Fix NIN Errors in the UK
NIN modifications are processed through NIMC's modification portal via FUWA Agribusiness, NINBVN.org's licensed NIMC partner. You do not need to travel to Nigeria at any stage.
- Contact us first
Call or WhatsApp +447450 444858. Tell us exactly what the error is and what your NIN or Transaction ID number is. We'll confirm what documents you need for your specific correction type before you book.
- Gather your supporting documents
Different errors require different evidence. A name correction requires your passport and (for married name changes) a marriage certificate or deed poll. A DOB correction requires your birth certificate. We guide you on exactly what to bring.
- Book your modification appointment
Modification appointments take 30–45 minutes — slightly longer than a new enrolment. Book at least 48 hours in advance so we can prepare the right forms.
- Attend your appointment
Our officer verifies your documents, confirms the error, and submits the modification request through the FUWA Agribusiness NIMC portal. You receive a modification reference number as confirmation.
- Correction processed by NIMC
NIMC processes modifications in the background. Changes are typically reflected in the database within 3–10 working days. We follow up on your behalf if there are delays.
Documents Required for NIN Modification
Bring originals only — our officer scans and returns them immediately.
Always Required
- ✓ Your original NIN slip or NIN PVC card
- ✓ Nigerian International Passport (valid or expired)
- ✓ Nigerian Birth Certificate (NPC-issued)
Additional Documents by Error Type
- → Name correction (married name): Marriage Certificate
- → Name correction (change by deed poll): UK Deed Poll document
- → Date of birth correction: NPC Birth Certificate as primary evidence
- → Phone number update: No additional document needed beyond primary ID
- → Duplicate biometric record: Contact us first — this requires a specific approach
Name Changes and Deed Poll
If you changed your name by deed poll after your NIN was issued — for example, following marriage, divorce, or a legal name change — your NIN record can be updated to reflect the new name.
- → Bring your UK Deed Poll document (enrolled or unenrolled — both are accepted)
- → Also bring your Nigerian passport (which may still show your old name) and Birth Certificate
- → If your passport is also due for renewal with the new name, sort your NIN modification first — then renew your passport using the updated NIN
⚠️ Tip: Fix NIN Before Renewing Your Passport
If both your NIN and passport have an old or incorrect name, always correct the NIN first. Your passport renewal application checks against the NIN database. If the names don't match, the application gets flagged.
